Fighters is a Raiden game like most of the other Raiden games. It’s a fun shooter with lots of frantic nonsense going on on screen the whole time, and it has cool weapons.
But the bummer is that there are too many cool weapons.
I know; it’s hard to believe.
But because there are so many unique ships and weapons to choose from, in the arcade shooter format this game was released in, it’s just impossible to give any one ship the focus it needs to develop a strategy.
For arcade shooters, it’s best if the player feels like they’ve developed a strategy with their avatar by the end of the game--a strategy other than pumping more quarters into the machine, that is.
You could hobble through without much care to learn your ship, because by the time you’d died and tried them all, you were pretty much at the end of the game anyway. Because of this, I hardly felt more proficient than I did when I started. And this made the game feel very vanilla.
