Finally, Capcom evolved the series! Don't get me wrong. I love me some Resident Evil, but its archaic control scheme and same-y enemies in the previous games do tend to bore. Then along comes RE4, with Leon on the hunt for the US President's daughter.
Gone (at least initially) is the Mansion, the lumbering zombies, and the slow frights. Now, the zombies are fast, weapon-wielding, Spanish-speaking psycho hordes who do a great job of keeping me on my toes. The game takes place outside as often as inside, and is no less tense for it.
Combat is fluid, the graphics are spectacular, the sound design is perfect, and the boss fights are awesome. All told, if you're a Resident Evil fan and you haven't played RE4, turn in your typewriter ribbon and get out of my face. We don't want you here.
