Mole Mania is a very good action-puzzle game, the likes of which have not been seen since The Adventures of Lolo series. This game is essentially The Adventures of Lolo with an added dimension: underground. The ability to go underground (mole-wise) created a lot of nice set ups and challenges for the player to overcome.
Many of the puzzles in Mole Mania had me stumped for a long time. One in particular had me stumped for literally years. Every few years I would go back to this game, and this time, the solution came to me and I finally pounded out the rest of the puzzles.
This is an excellent game with fun and challenging boss battles at the end of each stage and satisfying brain-teasing puzzles throughout. The only flaws were the following:
- The final boss battle was uncharacteristically difficult when compared to the rest of the game. Also, it forced the player to play the game unlike how they had ever played up until this point. I had to fight the final boss 12 times (the game keeps track) before finally beating him. It soured an otherwise incredible experience.
- Before the final boss, you had to beat all 7 of the other bosses with only one save point after the 4th boss you have to take out. This forced you to play through the final 3 bosses each time you died at the final boss. This is an old-school game, though, and they tend to be brutal that way, so while this was annoying, it wasn't nearly as bad as the final battle itself.
- The bonus levels (one per level) were so hard that I only actually did one of them.
- The later levels had a LOT of rooms in them. They had so many that I was starting to get bored by the end of the game.
Other than the above, this game was fantastic. If they ever came out with a new Mole Mania game, I would probably buy it. A huge plus is that the game saved after every room that was successfully solved, so it made this game perfect for pick-up-and-play handheld goodness.
If you're a fan of Lolo-type puzzle games, dig out the old Game Boy and play Mole Mania. It's worth it.
