I recently read an interesting series of articles from
our friends at
BITMOB.  In part 4, they quote Susan
Arendt's (
the Escapist) succinct, penetrating
perspective on the state of video game "journalism."
Read it for yourself and see if she doesn't hit the nail
fully on the head.

Here at BVG.net, we try to be a cut above the
standard trash you'll find around the 'net.  The key,
we think, is to write about the fun we have with our
games, as opposed to the component parts that
make the games fun.  In other words, we mean to
show that the game's worth is in the
gamer, not in the
game.

It's a critical difference
, though in practice we're still
as guilty as the worst offenders in this medium
.  But
we mean well.  At the very least, we try to be an
interesting read.

What we do
Beatenvideogames.net is a video
game review site dedicated to
reviewing games only after we've
beaten them.

Too often, we've read reviews
posted in the mainstream video
game media that focus on the
first couple hours of gameplay.
That means games are judged
and scored by their first
impression, not by the product as
a whole.

And let's face it, much of the
video game media is bought and
paid for by the publishers whose
games they "impartially" review.

The reviewers at this site take
issue with that philosophy and
have instead decided not to post a
review (except under special
circumstances) unless the game
has been completed.  And we're
not making any money off it.

practices, go
